Jon Snow & Daenerys Targaryen, the big deal

Now that I have your attention since we are all reeling in the aftermath and dealing with an existential crisis post the Game of Thrones Season 7 finale, I'd like to address the topic of Fair Trade & Ethical buying, I promise I won't throw just numbers and I will speak human to explain why it is not just a big but a huge deal.

You know many people do not even understand what Fair Trade is! Believe me when I say this, a lot of people don't even know the basics of it. I endorse Fair Trade and I cannot stress enough on how we all need to be participating in efforts to push Fair Trade on the front lines of our system and make it a part of our day to day lives. I have been criticized on my pushing of fair trade because I own a business that is based on Fair Trade, well to those I say "dawn happens when you wake up" I woke up and it dawned on me that I needed to participate in creating and leaving a better world for my kids to live in, a legacy if I can. We need to care about Fair Trade, anyone who criticizes me for talking about Fair Trade is a few pebbles short of a beach. Everyone should care about it, just like everyone should care about the environment because we live in it.
I can give you a million reasons but I will give you just a handful and will cross my fingers that you will re-consider your purchasing habits and keep in mind that every time you spend money, you are casting a vote for the kind of world you want.

Fair Trade means fair pay & wages for artisans, farmers and producers, all who work extremely hard under difficult conditions. The vase that you have been eying in a fancy store, chances are that it was made by a labor forced to compromise on his daily wages while the brand pocketed all the profits. I have worked in Retail Fashion and have seen firsthand the exploitation artisans face at the hand of big design houses. The work is all theirs but none of the glory or even a decent paycheck. It is also good to know that all Fair Trade products are made in safe & healthy working conditions. The producers & artisans all receive a fair price for their work and even have a say in how their workplace is run.

Artisans take a lot of pride in their work, they create beautiful things for the home, to wear, to accessorize, by hand. It's not just creative but is time consuming and needs practice and precision. Many art forms such as Hand Block Printing, Kalamkari or Chikankari have been in practice for decades or even centuries in a family. That's how they keep their art alive. Hand made means closer attention to detail which translates to superior quality products.

Fair trade is a great way of giving back to the community. I work with a couple of artisan collectives in India that work on a cooperative structure. Fair Trade artisans and small farmers are able to invest their earnings in their communities, improve housing, healthcare and schools. Every purchase matters, every single $ you spend buying a Fair Trade product helps and empowers an artisan community.
I also love how this concept of Fair Trade connects us globally. We are a global village, we get to know about different cultures, traditions, handicrafts. These products are unique to the places they come from and the people who make them.

Sustainable practices are a huge part of Fair Trade, which mean not only are Fair Trade products safe for you but are great for the planet and speaking of sustainable did you know that the practice of Fair Trade creates sustainable local economies? It gives artisans and farmers control over their own future. They can build their own businesses rather than working for a middle man who mostly eats up their profits.

I can go on and write a lot but I think you can get the gist of what I am trying to convey, if this wasn't enough to convince you, well I guess I will have to try harder. By buying Fair Trade products for your home or yourself, you are not just getting a high quality product but you are making a difference in the lives of people who make the sheets you put on your bed or the mugs you take your morning coffee in. Your purchase matters so please think because do you really want to buy something that was made by exploiting someone ???
