Fall Decor

Autumn is a second spring, where every leaf is a flower.

As much as we love summer especially on the east cost of the United States, we have to admit that there's some magic about fall. When someone says fall's here, what comes to your mind?Ummm..let's see, the leafy canopy of the Mall at Central Park in NYC, the Richard Gere starer Autumn in New York, the pumpkin spiced latte at Starbucks and putting away the pastels in and bringing out the velvet and warm tones out. As the weather gets cooler and the sun starts setting earlier, we begin to transition our home decor to fall hues. As I pull out my long skirts, my warm hand knitted scarves and tall boots I also take out my fall home decor, some pieces that I have been saving year after year, some I picked at end of season sales at the different stores and markets I have come to love. This is a fall tradition in my house.

I am going to write a few things about what you can change come fall, few simple things that can become traditions, just like they have become at my house.

  1. Table Decor - I like to use warm and bright tones for my table , bright colored trays that double up as serving trays or even as plain decor items and they even look great up on the wall. Now I know what you must think , the table is already dark colored , Mahogany or Cherry red but that's okay, you can still do a let's say like this. Try and match the color of the center piece with the color of your couch or try and find something in the same family.

    2. Table Linen - The use of silk or a heavier fabric is very much recommended and you will probably see it on display in a lot of home decor stores but I still use my cotton or linen runners with bright prints. I have a couple of cotton canvas runner which is a much heavier fabric than just cotton so it's more dense and can be clubbed with brighter decor items. Besides, I have a bias towards anything cotton and it also makes your home look different, it is kinda original and not copied from a fall catalog. I am a great believer of creating your own style and using what works best for you so by all means use what you have an maybe accessorizing it with a vase or a set of coasters.

    3. Bed Linen - I can never have enough Bed Covers. Period. Ever since I was a little girl, I have always had a big fascination with Jaipuri Quilts, for the uninitiated, the Jaipuri Quilt is an exquisite style of quilt making which includes many forms of artistic integration at different levels of production and as the name suggests it is made in Jaipur Rajasthan in India. The reason why these quilts are so perfect is the filling inside, the cotton is spread evenly and the cover is then hand stitched 2 fingers apart so the layer of cotton doesn't get bunched up in corners. The prints , oh the prints, the beautiful gorgeous hand block prints on the quilts. These quilts are perfect, not too bulky not too flimsy , just the right amount of warmth you need during this season. It's the perfect in-between quilt which you can keep using in winter as well and the super amazing part is that they can be used as Bed Covers or spreads too because they are so beautiful.

    4. Decor Pieces - Small little pieces like a set of coasters or a tray or even a vase can really bring the whole look together. Wooden artifacts work well if you really want to get the fall look. You can use pieces made of reclaimed wood if you like a rustic look and feel or MDF if you like smooth finishes. Reclaimed wood is actually great if you like me are into sustainable decor and sustainable living. Now I don't like to sound all preachy but I think we must be watchful of our footprints on this planet so Yes to sustainable living.

So these are a few of my suggestions on Fall Decor. I hope you will have as much fun decorating as I do, it's something that I always look forward to. It's my way of preparing for all the festivities that fall brings :)
